West Stafford Multi-Academy Trust (WSMAT) seeks a trustee with proven financial capability and experience to support its board and provide guidance and expertise as the trust seeks to grow. The trust is part of the Diocese of Lichfield however applicants of all faiths and of none are welcomed. Trust board meetings are held at locations around Stafford.
About the trust
The trust currently comprises three village primary schools. Extra funding for students is relatively low and all primary schools are rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted. A fourth school is in the process of joining the trust.
The trustees are keen to deliver the best education offer for all the trust’s students by working collaboratively as a multi-academy trust (MAT), while celebrating the uniqueness and retaining the individual characteristics of every academy.
Plans for the Future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- To achieve financial viability
- To attract additional schools to the trust
- To increase the proportion of shared services across the trust.
The trust hopes to expand and attract additional schools and/or to attract other MATs to merge. Initially the trust hopes to grow as a primary-only MAT but plans to merge with other phases in the future. This will form part of the ongoing planning and strategy development of the trust.

Role 1 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.
Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability during a period of rapid growth and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.
The competencies required for this role include:

- Change Management
- Growth Management
- Non-executive/ trustee
The ideal candidate will be a qualified accountant, with skills and experience from a senior position within a large organisation, able to provide guidance on financial probity in addition to scrutinising financial plans for sustainability and growth, and confident in offering challenge to the trust’s executive. Knowledge of strategic planning and experience in guiding a growing organisation would be beneficial to this role.
6 hours per month (minimum).

The board meets six times a year at different locations in and around Stafford town.
Background on academy trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 71% of secondary schools and 26% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 980 multi academy trusts of 2+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
