Diocese of Leicester Academies Trust seeks three non-executive directors to join its board. Board meetings are held in the Leicester area. Applications from people of all faiths (or of no faith) are welcome.
About the Trust
The Diocese of Leicester Academies Trust was created in March 2013 as a sponsor trust with three schools. More schools have joined over time with large increases in 2014 and 2017 bringing the current total to 14 primaries across Leicestershire, some of which are small village schools. The trust caters for schools with varying degrees of deprivation and some with vulnerable children who benefit from our caring and nurturing ethos. A primary school in the Leicester (City) local authority is set to join in the near future.
Plans for the Future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- Financial Management: to manage budget pressures for the small schools, four of which have recently gone through a staff restructure. The trust has recently purchased a new financial system, PS financials, and embedding this across the schools will take some time.
- School improvement: four of the schools within the trust have an Ofsted judgement of Requires Improvement. Work streams around different aspects of school improvement have been developed, e.g. assessment, Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework and a maths hub. Further work streams are being developed.
- Strengthening governance: a review of governance will be carried out across the trust in the Autumn Term.
Another primary school (taking the trust to 15 schools) is preparing to join us before the end of the year. The trust has a new CEO who started on 1 June 2018.

Trust is aligned to the Church of England culture of inclusivity and valuing all children and adults.

Roles 1 to 3 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.
Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability during a period of rapid growth and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

The trust seeks individuals with experience across a variety of business sectors. While it is acknowledged that not all candidates will possess all skills, it would be advantageous to identify an individual with experience of managing growth and sustaining quality across a number of establishments, including underperforming organisations.
Being a practising member of the Church of England is not a requirement but an appreciation of Church ethos and values and the inclusive nature of all the schools is essential.
4-6 hours per month (on average). The Trust Board meets 4 times per year (twice in the autumn and once in the spring and summer terms). The Finance committee meets once each term (3 times a year). Meetings are strictly timed and are never longer than 2 hours and start around 6 or 6.30 p.m.

Background on Academy Trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 29% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 760 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
