TBAP Trust seeks to recruit two individuals to its board, demonstrating respective key experience and skills in the field of financial planning, strategy and leadership, as well brand management, marketing and stakeholder engagement. Board meetings are held at The Bridge AP Academy, Fulham London.
About the Trust
Established in 2013, the TBAP Multi-Academy Trust supports learners who are experiencing difficulty with, or have been excluded from, mainstream education. The trust has three regional hubs situated in London, the East and the North West of England with a total of 12 schools at present with two more in the NW in the process of joining the NW hub. TBAP is the largest provider of AP provision in the country and these roles offer an exciting opportunity to make a real difference to generations of young people who have struggled to thrive in mainstream education.
TBAP provides outstanding education and intervention through its Alternative Provision (AP) Academies, Special Academies and outreach teams which work hard to ensure that every learner reaches their full potential.
As a DfE-approved academy sponsor the TBAP Trust sponsors Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) and Special Schools to become AP Academies. The trust also has the capacity to support converter AP Academies and new Free Schools wishing to join the TBAP Trust.
TBAP has proven to be highly successful at supporting the most vulnerable learners in many ways and retains a strong belief in providing support to young people throughout their lives. The trust has established a post-16 offer and a rural therapeutic residence in addition to its existing educational services to meet all needs.
At present, the trust comprises one Primary AP/Special Educational Needs (SEN) Academy, four Primary/Secondary AP/SEN Academies, four Secondary AP Academies, one post-16 Academic AP Academy, one Special Secondary Academy, three Managed Intervention Centres and two Primary Outreach Teams.
Plans for the Future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- Recovering a healthy financial position for the trust
- Balancing planned growth of the trust
- Fully engaging with all stakeholders to ensure staff wellbeing is maintained and excellent outcomes for TBAP learners continue to be achieved
By 2020 the trust anticipates having a network of at least 15 academies spread across its three regional hubs. The completion of its new build TBAP Campus site in Fulham will coincide with the development of a traded services offer to Alternative Provision and mainstream schools across the country.

Roles 1 & 2 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.
Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability during a period of rapid growth and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

- CFO/ Finance: An individual is sought with significant experience of managing complex finances and successful implementation of recovery plans. A proven track record of leading in a senior capacity on financial strategy and planning is essential to this role.
- Branding/ Marketing: This trustee will sit on the main board and provide support and challenge in the areas of communications, PR, marketing and Stakeholder Engagement. Skills, experience and a demonstrable track record in the area of brand engagement and communications is therefore essential. There may be an opportunity for this candidate to take a lead in supporting the trust’s use of ICT and new communication channels.
6 hours /month minimum.

Background on Academy Trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 28% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 726 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
