About the trust

The trust consists of one secondary free school based in Brixton. The academy was opened in 2014 by a group of parents who wanted to establish a new secondary school in South West London with a vision of establishing a true community of pupils, teachers, parents and friends within a compassionate culture. 

The school opened in modest temporary buildings with just a handful of pupils on roll but now occupies a brand-new building with state-of-the-art facilities and over-subscribed admissions. Currently the school has 501 pupils on roll; once full it will have 600 pupils aged 11 – 16 and 200 sixth form pupils.

Trinity pupils come from a variety of backgrounds with a high number of pupils who qualify for Free School Meals (FSM). Trinity has 29% of FSM pupils versus the national average of 14%. The academy also has a high percentage of pupils for whom English is an additional language and there is a small number of pupils who arrived in the UK as unaccompanied child refugees. Their care and integration into the academy and community is something the trust is very proud of. The pupil cohort also consists of a significant proportion of children on roll with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)  - 22%,

The trust intends to underwrite the future of the school by seeking to join a like-minded trust and to become part of a family of schools. This will enable the school to benefit from the additional capacity that comes with being part of a larger organisation, particularly in middle office functions like finance, HR and estates management.

Roles – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust. The core functions of their role are: ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding executive leaders to account for the educational and financial performance of a charitable company funded by the public purse. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust in compliance with its charitable objects, company and charity law.

Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and potential growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account. In the interests of safeguarding and in accordance with DfE requirements, all trustee appointments will be subject to an enhanced disclosure and barring service check.

Any new directors are likely to be in post for a period of 6-9 months whilst the decision-making and due diligence processes on both sides are undertaken. New directors will oversee the development of more robust financial compliance in line with best practice and the Academies Financial Handbook. They will also liaise with directors from the trust that the school will join to ensure a smooth transition for all children on roll, parents and other stakeholders
