Job Description

Ad Meliora Academy Trust seeks three non-executive directors to join the board. There are currently three primary schools in the trust with plans to grow. Board meetings are held in Kings Lynn.

About the Trust

Ad Meliora Academy Trust is a fledgling multi academy trust (MAT) based in an area in Kings Lynn with high levels of deprivation. There are three primary schools in the trust – two in Kings Lynn and one situated on the boundary between West and North Norfolk (approx. 10 miles away).

The trust is still small but making rapid improvements: Two schools joined the trust after an Ofsted 'Requiring Improvement' and significant inroads are being made in achieving better outcomes for all children.


Plans for the Future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. Recruitment of Non-Executive Directors (Trustees) Following an External Review of Governance the trust has been advised to recruit a further four directors to join the board.
  2. Consolidation within the three existing academies in terms of securing excellent outcomes for all children at the same time as growing the trust
  3. Ensuring the sustainability in one of our academies which currently has 70 children on roll – the school was originally a High School for an American airbase.
  4. Ensure additional capacity for the Chief Executive Headteacher to enable her to focus on strategy
  5. Support the move of St Edmund's children into their new school in September 2019
  6. Grow the trust with more schools joining

Role Summary

Roles 1-3 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.

Ad Meliora Academy Trust non-executive directors will be expected to sit on the Board of Directors and on one of the Local Teaching and Learning Boards,or one of three committees – Finance, Personnel and Pay Progression or Standards.


The competencies required for these roles include:

Person Specification

The trust needs to fill skills gaps on the board and are keen to recruit individuals who have the time to commit to the role and are focused on making a difference to the lives of young, and often disadvantaged, children. Specifically, the trust welcomes applicants with experience in one of the following areas:

  • HR or Legal: an individual who is engaged in HR and Change Management or a practising lawyer.
  • Real estate/Property or Branding/Marketing: due to the expanding nature of the trust, they would welcome someone with multi-site experience or with branding/marketing experience.
  • CFO/Finance: the trust seek a non-executive director with a background in finance.


Time Commitment

6 hours /month minimum. The board currently meets monthly, but this includes a number of training sessions to ensure trustees are fully inducted.

Background on Academy Trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 29% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 760 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
