Job Description

Selby College is seeking talented, experienced  individuals who genuinely wish to make a real difference, to join their leadership team. We invite you to join us and play your part in enhancing the educational opportunities, to act as an ambassador of the College and to make a positive impact on the lives of many in our local community.

 Selby College aspires to be our area’s first choice for education, skills and training and is inviting applicants to apply for a number of Independent Governor vacancies on the Board.

You would be joining the College at a time when there is a real opportunity to shape the future of the College and play a fundamental part in developing the educational provision for the 6th form and Further Education (FE) in the area. It is also a period of significant change within the FE Sector as a whole and you will play your part in establishing where the College is placed to provide support within the Sector in the years to come.

These are exceptional times and there will be challenges to face. Finance and funding, virtual learning, wellbeing and mental support are just some areas that have changed significantly in recent weeks. We need to adapt and seize opportunities – whether it be improving the quality of the education offer, strengthening our distance learning, designing new courses to support business needs or reviewing the curriculum offer and methods of delivery.

The College has an excellent estate, and strong partnerships with local businesses. It recognises the need to continually invest and develop our staff, our facilities, and our technology to give our students the best possible learning experience and preparation for the future. It also aims to develop partnerships with companies to develop our curriculum and improve the employment opportunities for our students in the future

As a governor, your experience and views would enhance and inform the leadership team and help to shape the College’s future.

The terms of office of a number of our Governors ends this summer. The board is actively looking for individuals to bring a broad range of skills, experience, and views and has a number of positions to fill. To backfill gaps as Colleagues leave, experience in Audit, Finance and Further Education would be an advantage for one or two of the roles. Overall we are looking for individuals who:

  • Will work well as part of the team, are comfortable to both challenge and support, and have the time to commit to the role.

  • Are passionate about Further and Higher Education and the benefits of education and training.

  • Will support the vision and values of Selby College and are willing to focus at a strategic level on what is best for the College in the years ahead.

  • Are able to listen, review and analyse the breadth of information presented, and are confident to critique and hold the Management team to account, to ensure decisions taken are in the best interests of the students and College in the longer term.

  • Previous non-executive roles is desirable, although not essential.

  • Links within the local Community, and businesses or experience of representing stakeholder views and community engagement would be an advantage for at least one role.

  • Are able to demonstrate leadership, selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness and honesty.

     

     

 At this time, we are also keen to maintain and ideally increase the diversity of the board. The Board seek to reflect the communities the College serves, particularly in relation to gender, ethnicity and age and strongly encourage expressions of interest from all suitably experienced individuals from all sections of the community, especially if they are currently under-represented on the Board. All appointments will be based on merit.

Training and support will be given. You will acquire new skills, widen your knowledge base and join a dedicated and hardworking team. For many, it develops their leadership skills and boardroom experience. The role can be rewarding and give a real sense of achievement for the greater good.

Appointments are made for a set term of up to four years. The role is highly fulfilling and is a voluntary one, so whilst not remunerated, out of pocket expenses will be paid.

The time commitment is varied and more detail is given in the Job Description, however in general terms it equates to a minimum of a couple of days a month over the year. Meetings are generally held at the College, although virtual attendance is accepted when needed. In the current situation, all contact is by virtual means. (Covid 19) The Board has 17 members, who meet for 6 Corporation meetings a year, and two Development events during the year. Members also attend Committee meetings, monitoring visits and updates with key members of the College team in addition to events at the College over the year.
