Job Description

Reach are working with Disability Equality North West (DEnw) in the recruitment of a new Marketing and Communications Trustee.

DEnw delivers user led services across Lancashire to enable disabled people to live independently and be active in their communities. Your marketing and communications expertise will advertise our services to new users and help attract funding.

The Role

DEnw is seeking a trustee with marketing and communications skills, and knowledge of fundraising and bidding, to raise our profile, to show the difference that we make and to attract more unrestricted funding and contracts.

Responsibilities as a Trustee of DEnw:


  • To work collaboratively with the other trustees, keeping with and furthering DEnw’s charitable objectives;
  • To contribute actively to the board of trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to DEnw by setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets;
  • With other trustees, to ensure that the policy and practices of DEnw are in keeping with its aims; and
  • With other trustees, to ensure that DEnw functions within the legal and financial requirements of a charitable organisation that strives to achieve best practice.


Specific Responsibilities of the Marketing and Communications Trustee:


  • Marketing of DEnw to the general public, local authorities / elected members, businesses and organisations (locally, regionally and nationally) and develop working partnerships that may lead to funding;
  • Develop messaging systems to communicate DEnw’s work and achievements;
  • Develop case studies for use in bids for funding;
  • Seek patrons for DEnw;
  • Provide training and thought leadership around issues relating to marketing, messaging and to liaise with trustees and staff;
  • To support yearly strategic/business planning, monitoring and review; and
  • Draw on your networks to support our work


Person Specification


  • Successful track record of marketing, messaging and communications in a business, the public sector or a charity;
  • Knowledge of fund raising and generating new revenue streams;
  • Experience of working at a senior management / leadership / trustee level;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and willingness to take collective responsibility for the governance of our charity;
  • Ability to work at a strategic level, think creatively and criticise constructively.
  • Good, independent judgement and a willingness to speak your mind;
  • A firm belief in and commitment to DEnw’s mission;
  • Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership; and
  • An understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.


  • Experience and knowledge of the day to day issues facing disabled people;
  • Experience and knowledge of other support services for women, men and children/young people; and
  • Understanding of the voluntary sector, social services and education.

Other information

  • This is a voluntary unpaid position; however reasonable travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed.
  • The length of the appointment is three years, initially as a co-opted trustee.
