|Job Title:||Lay Trustees | The Royal College of Emergency Medicine|

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine works to ensure high quality care for patients by setting and monitoring standards of care in emergency departments, as well as providing expert guidance and advice on policy to relevant bodies on matters relating to Emergency Medicine. We are responsible for setting standards of training and administering examinations in Emergency Medicine for the award of Fellowship and Membership of the College, as well as recommending trainees for CCT in Emergency Medicine.
The College now numbers over 10,000 Fellows and Members registered internationally and we work to represent both our members and the interests of patients. Overall, we want to advance education and research in Emergency Medicine.
We have embarked on our new 2020-2023 Corporate & Business Plan focusing on improving patient care, supporting our membership to achieve sustainable satisfying careers, and delivering high quality care, and advancing the practice of Emergency Medicine through research and engagement in Global Health.
Our work is as vital as ever as even before the advent of the Covid–19 pandemic, over 18 million people attended NHS Emergency Departments in 2019 and with increasing numbers of people living longer with a range of complex medical needs, and our Health and Social Care services not being developed to address this need, our Emergency Departments are now the first port of call for many patients.
We are at an exciting time in our development and our governance change has meant we are now creating a new Trustee Board to take effect in July 2021, chaired by Dr Katherine Henderson.
With a new strategy and a new Board, we are looking for three new Lay Trustees to join us. Our new Trustees will be aligned to our vision to see excellence in emergency medicine. We are creating a new board and are committed to ensuring the diversity of our board so we expressly encourage applications from a wide range of applicants. This includes the categories protected by UK law (age, disability, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation), as well as socio-economic background and ways of thinking.
We are looking for a blend of skills, experience and diversity across the three Lay Trustees. We need to cover three specific areas of skills and experience though we do not expect one candidate to have all three, matching one of these is sufficient:
- Deep charity governance experience.
- International experience from living and working overseas.
- Strategic and broad commercial expertise.
We expect the time commitment to be about 8-10 days per year, we will plan to meet four times a year as a board and so the commitment will reflect preparation time for meetings, meeting with the staff and membership, a strategy away day and other key events with stakeholders.
