About the role
In 2013 we started a journey that has seen us transform one of the worst ranked Students’ Unions (SU) in the UK, which engaged with less than 5% of students, to our current position of engaging with close to 80% of students and being consistently ranked as a top three SU.
We achieved this by ensuring the student voice was present in key decisions that impacted student learning; by offering a social programme to students that met or exceeded the experience of their peers at other institutions; by helping students when they were in need or at risk of dropping out; and by lifting the expectations and aspirations of our students.
This agenda shifts us beyond the scope of a traditional SU, it speaks to the priority of our members and our ambition to shift perceptions about what an SU is and what it can achieve.
Our focus now is to sustain our success by continuing to refine the way in which we work to achieve even greater productivity and engagement with our members.
Who we are looking for
Now, more than ever, we need a Trustee board that can continue to support, empower and champion the voice of students, and ensure that we are doing everything in our power to support students at this challenging time. As a Trustee, your contributions and skills will play a significant part in helping us navigate a global pandemic and build an even more impactful and sustainable SU.
At this moment in time, we would benefit most from candidates with entrepreneurial flair, financial and / or commercial expertise – ideally at a level where you can contribute to business wide planning and provide insight and advice on commercial operations. We are open to working with an experienced candidate or someone undertaking their first Trustee role. We will provide you with all the training support and development you would need to be a valued board member.
As a widening participation SU with a very diverse membership, it would be advantageous to have lived experience of overcoming a systemic barrier in life. We would actively like to encourage candidates from Black, Asian and other underrepresented groups to apply.
