Job Description

Purpose:

To provide non-clinical input and insight on the Board of Trustees of the British Thoracic Society (BTS)

To work with senior staff and Trustees to develop the work that has already been done to involve public and patient/carer contributions and voices in the work of the Society.

We hope that the new appointee will bring expertise about the health service (in as wide a definition of that term as possible) and add to the diversity of the membership of the current Board. Board members demonstrate a positive mix of ages and gender, with all other Trustees being employed within the NHS in clinical (not necessarily medical) roles.

Duration:

We are seeking someone to serve for a three year term, to December 2023. The Board of the Society meets (currently via remote meetings software) 4 times a year (with an Awayday every third year in addition to the quarterly meetings). We expect that the lay Trustee will also be involved, possibly as many as one extra meeting per month. We have accessible offices in central London which we anticipate will be used as soon as circumstances allow.

We also provide Trustee training (refresher and induction) annually

This is a non-remunerated role. Travel expenses and other reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be met, however.

We are seeking a new lay Trustee who can take the lead on and work with senior Society staff and other members of the Board to develop the model of Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) within the Society that was first put in place in 2008 and which has been developed since 2018 by the outgoing Lay Trustee.

A new task for 2020 onwards will involve developing the Society’s system for supporting all other lay and patient/carer members of BTS Committees, Guideline Groups and other advisory groups.  This is likely to involve convening an annual meeting as well as individual discussion with these colleagues to ensure that the Society’s support for their role is sufficient, appropriate and effective.
