The Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU) is looking for an external trustee to join our trustee board, for an initial term of three years.
SUBU is an independent charity, representing around 19,000 Bournemouth University students. We are led by four democratically-elected sabbatical officers, who are the voice of students at Bournemouth University and work to make the student experience as great as possible. Whether that it is through our clubs and societies, our commercial venues or by providing advice and representation, we are here for students.
As a charity, we have a trustee board which steers the strategic direction of the students’ union and provides oversight of the charity’s operations to ensure financial sustainability, legal compliance and reputational integrity. This is an exciting time to join SUBU as a trustee - we have recently completed a democracy and governance review and are currently developing a new strategic plan and are looking for external expertise to help us achieve our strategic objectives. You’ll also gain experience of sitting on the Board of a multi-million pound charity with a trading subsidiary and play a key role in the strategic direction of the Students’ Union.
In this application round, we are seeking a trustee with commercial and financial acumen. The right candidate will have an innovative mindset and be able to help us drive organisational improvements for the benefits of our members.
This position is voluntary, however reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed. Training will be provided.
Trustees are expected to attend up to five Board meetings a year of around 3-4 hours each, as well as a strategy day. There is an expectation that the right candidate for this role may also join the Audit and Risk Committee, of which there are up to five meetings a year of around two hours each.
All meetings will take place via Microsoft Teams until the end of 2020, after which they will take place at the Students’ Union in Bournemouth.

To apply for the role, please send a CV and covering letter of no more than two pages to firstname.lastname@example.org on why you would like to be a trustee and how you meet the selection criteria.
Applications for the role close on 19th August 2020 with the anticipation that interviews will take place via Microsoft Teams week commencing 24th August 2020.
