Job Description

Set in 25 acres of glorious countryside, the Royal Agricultural University offers a stunning learning environment on a historic campus which is home to 1,200 undergraduate students. Our Cotswold campus has outstanding facilities, including excellent on-site catering and our fully resourced Library.

Right now, we're going through a period of exciting change. We have a new strategy in place and a new executive team to help us develop and deliver a plan to improve and expand the university and guarantee its future. The Governing Council will be key to this process and will have a major influence on the direction we take. It is here that we need your time and expertise.

The role of a Trustee offers a great opportunity to make a difference to a charitable cause. Although voluntary and unpaid, it comes with the satisfaction of having made a difference to the lives of students, staff and other stakeholders in the University. There are three vacancies, and ideally we’re looking for people with skills and experience in higher or further education, digital marketing or finance.

Each Trustee role involves assist the Governing Council and the Vice-Chancellor in setting a clear vision, mission and strategy for the University and upholding its brand and values. You’ll also monitor the implementation of the University’s new five year strategic plan and its KPIs. In addition, the person we appoint who has a finance background (ideally a qualified accountant) will Chair our Finance & Estates Committee.

To apply, you’ll need a commitment to the University and its vision, mission and values and an understanding of the external context in which we operate. Ideally, you're also familiar with understanding of Nolan's seven principles of public life. The ability to build effective working relationships with fellow governors, the Vice-Chancellor, the executive team and University staff and students is key. We’ll also be looking for sound judgement, a flair for thinking creatively and strategically and a willingness to speak your mind and, of course, devote the necessary time and effort.

If you would like to express your interest, please send a full CV and a covering letter outlining your interest by email to Human Resources - or phone or by post to Human Resources, The Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester, Gloucestershire GL7 6JS. Electronic responses will make it easier for us to share information amongst those involved in the appointment process.

We would be particularly keen to understand:

  • your current role and previous relevant experience

  • your involvement to date with higher education organisations and/or charities

  • why you feel that we should call you for interview

We are not worried about the format or length of your letter, but we would encourage you to be clear and concise, so that we can easily recognise your skills and strengths.

Closing date: Sunday 21st October 2018.
