About Chase Community Solar (CCS)
CCS is a Community Benefit Society committed to relief of fuel poverty and action to combat climate change. It has raised just short of £1mn to install solar PV on the roofs of 314 Council bungalows in Cannock Chase District. The Society is owned by its 180 members who elect the Board.
The electricity generated by the panels is provided free to the occupants of the bungalows many of whom are elderly or less able members of the community, enabling them to save significant sums on their energy bills. In addition the carbon savings from the renewable electricity generated are substantial. CCS is also providing financial support to local charity, Beat the Cold, to enable them to establish a fuel poverty advisory service in Cannock Chase District.
An exciting new departure is the involvement of CCS in Zero Carbon Rugeley (ZCR), a project funded by Innovate UK and led by Engie, with the aim of designing – and then delivering – a smart local energy system in Rugeley, a town of 25,000 population in Cannock Chase District. CCS is a partner in facilitating community engagement and co-design of the concept and aspires to play a key role in the delivery of the SLES as it evolves.
