Oxford Union Society
The Oxford Union is the world famous debating society of the Oxford University founded in 1823. It is currently seeking a new honorary Senior Treasurer on the retirement of the current incumbent.
The OUS is independent from the University and is managed by a Standing Committee comprised of elected student members of the Society, a Senior Treasurer and a Senior Librarian. The Senior Treasurer is also expected to be one of the Trustees of the Society who have ultimate custodial responsibility for the Society.
Day to day accounting is carried out by employed staff of the Society overseen by the Bursar. The Senior Treasurer should be able to interpret, explain and advise Standing Committee on the finances of the Society which has an annual turnover in excess of one million pounds and significant Grade II* listed buildings in the centre of Oxford. He or she will be responsible for maintaining an overview of the Union’s finances, working closely with the Bursar in an advisory capacity and liaising with the Society’s auditors.
During term time one or both the Senior Officers should attend the weekly Monday afternoon meeting of Standing Committee in an advisory capacity and no money matters may be decided with a Senior Officer present. The Senior Treasurer should also attend Finance Committee which precedes Standing Committee.
It is expected that the role of Senior Treasurer will appeal to a resident of Oxford or the environs. The role is unpaid.
