About the role
As two of our current finance Governors are approaching the end of their term later this year, we now need to appoint additional Governors to join the Board in September 2020 to ensure consistency and continued financial scrutiny. The term of office is four years (subject to annual review) with potential to serve up to two terms.
The time commitment is based around five (three hour) board meetings starting at 17:15, plus a strategic away-day in January. In addition, the Governors are expected to be appointed to a relevant sub-committee and act as a ‘Link Governor’ across the College. Overall, it is estimated that a Governor will be required to commit to up to 40 hours per academic year.
We have outstanding financial health, so we are now in a position of strength to deliver against our new ten-year Strategic Plan – 2020-2030, which works towards our ambition to be ‘Outstanding’ and provide high-quality technical education and training, to equip our students with the skills and qualifications for the changing world of work, and to drive the ambitions and prosperity of the communities of Medway, Maidstone and surrounding areas.
As the College receives significant funding from its wholly owned subsidiary company, MKC Training Services, you will help to ensure that their role in financially funding the College is understood by the Governing Body, so they can be supported appropriately to deliver on their own strategic plan which is focussed on diversifying services and income to safeguard and strengthen the financial return to the College.
Who we're looking for
With a naturally strategic mindset, financial and/or audit expertise operating at a very senior level within a large and complex business environment, and a passion and commitment to lifelong learning, you will be part of a committed and diverse Board of Governors.
Whilst you may not have experience of further education, you will have a keen interest and appreciation to care about the impact that further education has on people and the socio-economic impact the College creates in the community. MidKent College provides life-changing opportunities to people of all ages, so it is vital that you recognise this and are willing and able to champion the work of the College in an ambassadorial role across the sector, the local community and wider stakeholder communities.
You will have an inclusive and collaborative style, to enable and foster open and honest discussion and debate around the Board table. You will have experience and recognition of the difference between executive and non-executive decision making.
With further education, and the education sector more broadly in a period of change, driven by digital technology, financial challenges, and an active policy agenda, it is important the College can change and adapt in response to Government policy. You will need to be confident in challenging decisions constructively and recognising the right questions to ask to ensure rigour and scrutiny around the financial decisions that are made by the College and the Board.
