York College is looking for dynamic, strategic thinkers who are seeking to broaden their horizons, contribute to a thriving, outstanding College environment and be part of a group of 20 Governors who have a passion for education and the future development of the College.
You would be part of a Board from a variety of sectors including College staff and students, who oversee the College’s strategic direction, financial performance and the quality of education and training provided.
Meeting four times a year, supported by Committees of the Board, Governors make arrangements for developing and implementing a strategic plan; setting, implementing and monitoring a financial plan; scrutinising performance data to ensure the quality of education and training, and overseeing arrangements for the health, safety and welfare of the College’s staff and students.
As ambassadors, Governors also get the opportunity to attend and participate in a range of College events, including working with employers, student awards and prize giving ceremonies, graduation, student performances and productions, and events in the high quality Ashfields Restaurant.
Governors are drawn from a range of backgrounds, but usually have a range of senior leadership experience from public, private or charitable sectors. We are particularly interested in individuals who have experience of:
- Education leadership
- The corporate service areas; IT, facilities, legal and MIS and large scale administration
- The York and local business community
We are also looking for individuals who have the experience/capability to:
- Chair a committee
- Take on the role of Chair of Governors in the future
York College provides ‘outstanding’ education and training for almost 8,000 students and apprentices. Our students are principally drawn from across Yorkshire and the Humber, but we also attract students from across the country and internationally. We’re keen to secure applicants from a diverse range of people, reflecting the diversity of our students and the city we serve.
Whilst the role is unpaid, expenses are covered.
