Could you be a Governor at one of the largest and top performing colleges in Wales?
Last year over 17,000 learners chose to study at Coleg Gwent.
Our results are consistently excellent, with A Level outcomes above the Welsh and UK comparators and the joint best results in Wales for vocational learners. We want to continue building on this and through investment in cutting edge technology and effective partnership working, we’ve introduced new and innovative teaching models and expanded our Higher Education provision. New campus developments and commercial ventures are in the pipeline, all of which will help us towards our vision to be THE College of Choice.
Success doesn’t just happen though, it needs strong leadership and our Board of Governors works closely with the senior management team to provide it. The Board has ultimate responsibility for setting the educational character and mission of the College and for ensuring that it meets its strategic objectives. With an annual turnover of c£57m, the Board is also responsible for securing long-term financial sustainability, setting the annual budget and ensuring the appropriate use of public funds.
We are looking for individuals interested in committing to a voluntary role that is challenging, but rewarding. Ideally, you’ll have experience in senior management roles, or perhaps run your own business. A good awareness of the economy and needs of employers in and around the South Wales/Bristol region is important, as is a genuine interest in education and training. Governors act as a ‘critical friend’ to the management team; taking a strategic overview and asking challenging questions. You need to be ambitious with us and most importantly, you should be enthusiastic.
Governors attend a minimum of one meeting a month and you will need to allow additional time to prepare. You’ll be encouraged to take an interest in the wider life of the College and have the opportunity to attend awards evenings as well as competitions, exhibitions and performances to develop your understanding of what we do.
This is a voluntary role, but reasonable travelling expenses can be reimbursed.
The Coleg Gwent Corporation Board is committed to the principles of equality and diversity. All Governors are appointed on the basis of the experience and skills they can bring to the role.
