Job Description

Coleg Gwent transforms the lives of around 18,000 learners each year by helping them to reach their full potential. We do this through a hugely diverse range of provision that includes full and part time, community, online and employer-based education and training. Our courses range from personal interest right up to university level (and everything in between).

We’ve invested in cutting edge technology, developed effective partnerships with local employers and we have exciting capital projects in the pipeline. In January 2021 the Torfaen Learning Zone, our latest state-of-the-art campus, will open in Cwmbran. Our outcomes are consistently excellent and we are committed to continuous improvement. Our vision is to be THE College of Choice and our Governors provide the strong and effective leadership needed to achieve this.

We are looking for individuals interested in applying their skills and expertise to a voluntary role that is challenging but also rewarding. The Board works closely with the senior management team to provide strategic leadership and acts as a ‘critical friend’, providing challenge and support in equal measure. Board responsibilities include setting the educational character and mission of the college and monitoring progress against strategic objectives. With an annual turnover of c£58m, the Board is also responsible for ensuring long term financial sustainability, setting annual budgets and ensuring the effective use of public funds.

You’ll need integrity, strong personal and professional values and experience of leadership at a senior level. An eye for detail and a willingness to challenge and ask questions is essential, along with an understanding of the needs of businesses and employers. Most of all, you should have a genuine enthusiasm for the transformative role of education and training.

We welcome interest from anyone who feels they have the right experience and skills to contribute to the work of the Board and at this time we are especially keen to hear from those with a background in the finance, audit and accountancy sectors.

Governors must be prepared to attend on average, one meeting a month and you’ll need to allow additional preparation and reading time. You’ll receive an induction and be encouraged to engage in development opportunities, attend college events and take an interest in the wider life of the college. This voluntary role is not remunerated but reasonable travel expenses can be reimbursed.

The Coleg Gwent Corporation is strongly committed to the principles of equality and diversity. All members are appointed on merit on the basis of their skills and experience in relation to the Corporation Member Person Specification, the contribution they can make to the work of the Board and the current skills profile of the Board.
