ACE’s solar energy installations are already generating 100,000 kWh/year and saving over 50 tonnes / year of carbon emissions. Now, in the wake of the IPCC Report, our aim is rapidly to expand our renewable energy generation capacity – especially to benefit schools and community organizations. Also, to raise income for community projects focused on sustainability and energy efficiency.

To achieve this, we plan to investigate and pursue further investment opportunities, whilst keeping a watchful eye on risks and the effective financial management of our existing installations.

Role purpose: to lead the Board in directing and managing ACE’s financial affairs.Key attributes:

Introduction to Avalon Community Energy Ltd (ACE)

ACE is a community benefit society, established to generate renewable energy and to raise income for community projects focused on sustainability and energy efficiency. Our aim is for ACE to expand its renewable energy generation and energy efficiency installations. To achieve this, we plan to investigate and pursue investment opportunities, whilst keeping a watchful eye on our risks and the effective operational management of our existing installations.

Background to the role

ACE is run by a volunteer board of directors elected from the membership. We have nearly 200 members comprised of local community members and supporter investors. The board carries out its responsibilities in the spirit of active collaboration. In doing so, it frames the issues and thinks creatively about the opportunities and challenges for ACE to fulfill its ambitions. This brief describes the specific responsibilities of this role, over and above the legal and ethical duties of all directors to effectively govern the organization.

Role description
Purpose: to guide and advise the Board on all financial matters

Principal responsibilities

  •  Advise the Board in its duty to ensure the financial health of the organization, including managing and mitigating financial risks and associated opportunities and ensuring financial accountability.

  •  Work closely with the Chair and Company Secretary to give direction to Board financial policy- making and to monitor the implementation of financial decisions

  •  Advise on the viability of potential and proposed projects and their financial implications

  •  Advise on the case for financial investment and the distribution of returns to shareholders

  •  Oversee and liaise with the Treasurer (who keeps the books, pays the bills and raises sales

    invoices)

  •  Contribute to the preparation of annual accounts & financial report for the AGM

  •  Develop the financial knowledge and capability of the Board of Directors

    •  Enthusiasm for taking a lead role in pursuing ACE’s aims

    •  Confidence to contribute effectively to Board level decision-making and a good team player

    •  Experience of effective business / financial / management

    •  Relevant financial qualification

    •  Working knowledge of investment appraisal and accounting practices

      Desirable attributes

    •  An appreciation of the culture of SME / non-profit / community organisations

    •  Experience of running a business and / or an accountancy qualification

    •  Knowledge of Community Benefit Organisations
