The British Institute at Ankara supports, enables and encourages research in Turkey and the Black Sea region in a wide range of fields including archaeology, ancient and modern history, heritage management, social sciences and contemporary issues in public policy and political sciences. Founded in 1948, the BIAA was incorporated in the 1956 cultural agreement between the Republic of Turkey and the United Kingdom. The BIAA is one of the British Academy's overseas Institutes. It has offices in Ankara and London, and a dedicated staff of experts from a wide variety of academic and cultural backgrounds. London-based professional staff consist of a full time London office Manager, a part-time Senior Development Manager and a part time Communications Assistant. Candidates should have experience of financial management in the commercial or not-for-profit worlds and, ideally, hold an accountancy qualification. Subject to the experience and interests of the person recruited, it is envisaged that the Deputy Hon. Treasurer will be responsible for the following functions:-

  • Serve as a Trustee, subject to approval of new Articles of Assocn.

  • Deputise for the Hon. Treasurer as required, including attendance at Council meetings.

  • Serve on the Finance & Personnel Committee.

  • Act as Administrator for BIAA’s e-banking accounts in London.

  • Approve invoices submitted to the London office.

  • Review bank and payroll reconciliations as appropriate.

  • Periodically review expense claims from staff and Trustees.

  • Monitor the monthly management accounts and report any issues to the Hon. Treasurer, Finance Committee and/or Council as appropriate.

  • Agree the content of the Quarterly Report and reforecast for the British Academy with the London Manager and forward to the Hon. Treasurer.

  • Own and manage the Purchasing Process.

  • Approve payments between £1000 and £10,000.

  • Support the London Manager in liaison with Ankara as required.

  • Visit Ankara at least during the first year of appointment.

It is hoped that the Deputy Hon. Treasurer will take up their post at or as soon as possible after the 2019 AGM (10 December).
