The Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU)

We are looking to recruit an external trustee at the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU).

Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. They may be known by other titles, such as: directors; board members; governors; committee members.  Whatever they are called, trustees are the people who lead the charity and decide how it is run.”

Our trustees are the people that have overall oversight of the charity.  They are not involved in running the charity on a day-to-day basis as we have a team of officers and staff that do this.  However, our board of trustees collectively make decisions about the approach the Union will take and its future direction.  They make sure that, as an organisation, we have the policies and procedures we need to show we’re complying with our legal obligations.  They provide support, ideas and constructive challenge to our staff team to test our thinking and help the charity to achieve the best it can for our services uses and demonstrate the difference that we make.

SUBU is very proud of the positive and trusting culture that it has and strongly believes that the way we do things is as important as what we do.  Our Trustees are an integral part of this as they help us to move towards our goal that ‘By 2023 SUBU will be a Union that ‘Enables students to see their future now’.

Charity trustees are the people who have the overview and strategic scrutiny of the management of a charity.  When recruiting trustees, we have to give careful consideration to the balance of skills on the trustee board. 

In order to support our current Trustee board we are, in particular, seeking applications from candidates who can offer skills and experience in:

Finance and Accounting

We would welcome candidates who are currently working in one of these fields and may wish to consider the role as part of their wider career development.

The position is unremunerated, however, reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed.

The commitment for Trustees will be to attend 4 Board meetings (average length  three hours) a year in Bournemouth, a strategy day and / or a training day each year and an interest in joining one of our Committees which meet up to 4 times a year (average length two hours).
