Carers Choices are recruiting for new Trustees to join the board

Carers Choices is a local charity serving the Essex area providing invaluable support to Carers and the people they care for.  

We want to add to the talent already around the Board.  

You will need to be able to commit to attending quarterly board meetings and a quarterly sub-committee.  

Between meetings you will be expected to keep up to date with the workings of the Charity.  

This is an unpaid role but it pays huge dividends in providing a sense of wellbeing.

Carers Choices Trustee Role Description 

Overall Purpose  

The Board of Trustees are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, developing the organisations aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document.  

 Main Responsibilities  

  • To determine the overall direction and development of the charity through good governance and clear strategic planning, and 
  • To ensure that the charity functions within the legal and regulatory framework as published by the Charity Commission for England Wales and in line with the charity’s governing document, continually striving for best practice in governance.
  • To be an effective and proactive member of the board, contributing to the board’s decision making and strategy

 Main Duties  

  • Bring experience, interest and scrutiny to the operations of the Charity, particularly through membership of one of the subcommittee’s reporting to the Board.
  • Formulate and regularly review Strategic Plans for the organisation.
  • Promote and develop the charity in order for it to grow and maintain its relevance to its beneficiaries, ensuring the charity carries out its purpose for public benefit.
  • Ensure that there is sound financial management of the charity’s resources, that expenditure is in line with the organisations’ objects, and any investment activities meet accepted standards and policies.  
  • Annually review and approve the charity’s budget and appoint independent auditors 
  • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the charity, its performance against objectives and appropriate use of resources,  
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality about all sensitive/confidential information received in the course of undertaking trustee duties. 
  • Act in the best interest of the charity, beneficiaries and future beneficiaries at all times.  

Accountability 

The board is collectively responsible and liable for the governance and functioning of the charity. They are accountable in varying degrees to a variety of stakeholders, including: service users, funders, the Charity Commission and Companies House. Delivery of the agreed strategic plan and operational management of the charity is delegated to the Chief Executive. 

Person Specification

  • Experience of working at a senior management / leadership level
  • Ability to work as part of a team and willingness to take collective responsibility for the governance of our charity
  • Ability to work at a strategic and visionary level whilst understanding the detail and complexities of delivery, and the influencing skills needed to bring staff and stakeholders along with plans
  • Strong communicator
  • Ability to analyse risks and opportunities, and take a balanced approach to both
  • Long term commitment to Carers Choices
  • To undertake duties in a manner that upholds the Nolan Principles of Public Life (Selflessness, Integrity, Objectivity, Accountability, Openness, Honesty and Leadership) and in a way that adds to public confidence and trust in the charity

Time commitment and location

·       The Board meets at least 4 times a year, either during the day or in the evening to accommodate all diaries.

·       You will be a member of a sub-committee which will meet at least 4 times in a year.

·       Board meetings are held at the organisation’s premises: Carers Choices, The White House, Kiln Road, Benfleet, Essex SS7 1BU or via Microsoft Teams/Cisco Webex
