Job Description

About the role

Gingerbread is the leading national charity working with single parent families, championing their voices and keeping their needs at the heart of everything we do. Our vision is a world where diverse families can thrive and our mission is to champion and enable single parent families to live secure, happy and fulfilling lives.

We do this through direct support via our free single parent helpline, our training programmes and our peer support groups, alongside our campaigning activity, influencing government policy and challenging social stigma.

Our work has never been more needed or relevant and this has been brought into acute focus currently with Covid-19 which is particularly challenging for single parents and their children, faced with the practicalities of self-isolation and school and childcare closure. Urgent action is needed to better protect single parents and their children during this crisis and beyond, and we will be there to protect single parents, rights, welfare and wellbeing.

With a renewed focus and ambition to increase our reach, visibility and impact of our work we are looking for a new Chair to keep us focused on our mission, ensure we realise our future potential and enable more single parents to access our support.

You will be joining a capable and diverse board who work alongside a focused, talented and determined team. Together we are looking forward to an exciting future – we are steadfast, courageous and unwavering in our focus to support and champion single parents and we are poised to achieve so much more.

Who we are looking for

As our new Chair, you need to be aligned to our vision, highly empathetic to single parents’ experiences and motivated to achieve social change. You will bring strong strategic commercial and financial nous to help us develop our income and financial sustainability as well as amplify our brand, presence and impact. We are looking for an open and creative thinker, someone who can keep us focused but also enable us to evolve, develop and continue to respond to and champion the changing and diverse needs of single parents.

This will be a challenging but hugely rewarding role, offering the opportunity to take us to the next level and we welcome an energetic and tenacious leader who can also support our ambitious CEO and talented team.
