About the role
Freedom is a fundamental right for everyone. Anti-Slavery International works to eliminate all forms of slavery and slavery-like practices throughout the world, including forced labour, debt bondage, human trafficking, descent-based slavery, the worst forms of child labour and forced marriage. In just one year, we have worked to strengthen and support 24 overseas anti-slavery partners across 17 projects in 13 countries and so supporting 58,062 women, men and children, helping them build lives free from slavery.
We are a trailblazer and have tirelessly campaigned for over 180 years to ensure every person has the right to freedom.
We campaigned for ten years in Niger and, after this long battle, the country finally outlawed a ‘fifth wife’ sexual slavery practice. We supported a case that won at the High Court and enabled victims of slavery to have cuts to their benefits reversed. This benefited over a thousand survivors. We also campaigned successfully for forced marriage to be recognised as a form of slavery.
With 40 million people globally affected by slavery and we must continue our work, ensure survivors’ voices are heard and continue to leverage and influence for a world free from slavery.
We will continue to work alongside local organisations across the globe to secure the freedom of those in slavery or vulnerable to it. We will campaign for changes in attitudes towards slavery and press for more effective implementation of national and international laws and policies until everyone, everywhere is free.
Our new strategy is an integrated plan of community-based projects, campaigning and advocacy work around our core themes: child slavery, business and human rights, trafficking and environment. We are excited about the potential of our new strategy and impact we can have by firmly placing survivor voices at the heart of all solutions to deliver change in anti-slavery policy.
Who we're looking for
Our current Chair, Tanya English, will be standing down later this year. Our new Chair must bring energetic leadership to the trustees and the desire to enhance the boards effectiveness further. Our board’s aspiration is to operate more often in the strategic and generative space where the impact can be maximised.
As Chair, you will be joining an organisation with a fantastic history, an engaged and committed team of trustees and a high-performing Chief Executive. We are a small NGO with big ambitions. Our strong track record of influencing society around the world gives us a great platform to achieve more.
With this in mind, the new Chair should bring broad international perspectives – ideally from experience of living or working in different countries to complement a track record of board leadership. This is a high-profile role and our new Chair will need patience and ambition to support our growth and have more impact, leverage, and influence. We expect the time commitment to be about 3-4 days per month.
