The Friends of Moorfields Eye Hospital (“The Friends”) is a registered charity supporting the patients and staff at Moorfields Eye Hospital (‘MEH’), a world centre of excellence for the specialist treatment of eye diseases. The Friends is a thriving and active member-led organisation, providing a range of services to support the work of the hospital – including managing a team of over 200 volunteers and the Health Information Hub.
We are looking for a strong leader to Chair the trustee board.
The Chair will provide leadership for the Board of Trustees in its key role of setting the strategy, policy and overall direction of The Friends. They will work closely with The Friends’ CEO to support and build The Friends’ network, and will act as an enthusiastic ambassador for the organisation.
The Friends has had to respond quickly and positively to change during the past 12 months as we supported MEH throughout its response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the recovery process. Looking forward there will be new and exciting challenges as we work with MEH to support ‘Oriel’ - a joint initiative between MEH, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) and Moorfields Eye Charity to build a new centre for eye care, research and education.
In light of this the Board has recently undergone a governance review and has established a new committee structure. Collectively Trustees have overall responsibility for The Friends’ work - focusing on strategy, agreeing plans and budgets, and supporting the Chief Executive Officer and staff who have delegated responsibility to manage the operational running to ensure that the organisation is effectively and properly run.
We are very proud of the work we do and to enable us to build on this we are looking for a Chair who is committed to improving patient experience and to making a difference to Moorfields Eye Hospital.
The Friends is looking for an exceptional and committed individual to lead its Board of Trustees.
We are looking to appoint someone with strong leadership skills who can demonstrate strategic and critical thinking; has excellent communication and inter‐personal skills and has a proven track record of creating an aspiring ethos in the teams they have led.
We are an equal opportunity employer. The aim of our policy is to ensure that no job applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment because of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation and we welcome applications from everyone.
What's in it for the volunteer?
The Chair will be supported by a team of experienced and committed trustees, as well as an excellent CEO and staff team. They will be encouraged to take up appropriate training opportunities and to further develop their own leadership skills.
The Board meets six times a year, holds for one full day strategy day and has an AGM. There are also ad hoc meetings with staff and sub-committees.
