APOPO is a ground-breaking global nonprofit organization training rats to save lives. APOPO’s rats, also nicknamed “HeroRATS”, detect landmines and tuberculosis using their amazing sense of smell in several affected countries around the world. APOPO also conducts research into scent detection by animals and aims to develop new humanitarian applications for the detection rats.
APOPO’s mission is to develop detection rats technology to provide solutions for global problems and inspire positive social change. We embrace quality, innovation, social transformation and diversity as our core values.
In 2018, APOPO celebrated 20 years of impact: APOPO’s detection rats helped to identify more than 107,000 landmines and explosive remnants of war, and detected more than 14,000 tuberculosis patients.
APOPO’s roots are in Belgium, with its operational and research headquarters based
in Tanzania, and with active programmes in Cambodia, Ethiopia, Mozambique, and Tanzania, and expansion underway to Colombia and Zimbabwe. The programmes are supported by two fundraising foundations, APOPO US and the APOPO Foundation Switzerland.
APOPO aims to set up a new Foundation in the United Kingdom (UK) to support its global mission and strengthen our collaboration with UK partners and our engagement with the UK public. APOPO is currently a main beneficiary of the UK People’s Postcode Lottery, UK Aid as well as the UK public and other UK based foundations.
APOPO is now seeking a Chair of the Board of Trustees as well as a minimum of three Trustees to lead and support a growth strategy for the APOPO Foundation in the UK. We would like to compose a well-balanced Board of Trustees with connections to government aid, foundations, corporate giving or academic research. We are seeking candidates with fundraising, legal, or financial experience and knowledge of mine action, health, animal welfare or scent detection would be a bonus.
The Trustees will at minimum need to attend a few meetings per year, with some additional time commitment for networking and fundraising expected.
The Board of Trustees will oversee transparent governance of the Foundation and the fulfilment of all legal requirements. The Board will engage with and be supported by the current APOPO management structure. We anticipate that, when sufficient income is generated, the UK Foundation will employ its own Fundraising Director. As a trustee, you will greatly contribute to the livelihoods of communities affected by landmines and tuberculosis and be part of an inspiring international organization supporting the impact of our HeroRATs.
