Job Description

Leicester and Rutland Community Foundation help keep our area thriving by managing grant-giving funds for families, companies and others. We've made a swift response to Covid-19, delivering £1m in emergency grants. Our new Chair will lead us to next level.

About Leicester and Rutland Community Foundation

Leicestershire and Rutland Community Foundation specialises in giving grants to the "unsung unseen" charitable and voluntary groups that help keep our area healthy, safe and thriving and our social fabric strong.

We do this by enabling local philanthropy, setting up inexpensive grant giving funds for families, individuals and companies. We also deliver grants locally for government, and reinvigorate dormant funds.

We are one of 46 independent Community Foundations in the UK, networked via the national UKCF

We  made a swift and effective response to the pandemic, delivering £1m in emergency grants from the National Emergencies Trust, DCMS and private donor funds.

Role summary

The Chair will be someone who can make the Foundation their only or main non-executive role. We estimate it will require around 2-3 days a month for formal and informal meetings, events and reading.  S/he will have the connections, experience, energy, and personal qualities to:

  • Lead an increase in philanthropic giving through the Community Foundation
  • Help us to make a difference to our local communities via local philanthropy
  • Foster and promote a warm, collaborative, effective team environment.
  • Bring experience, interest and time to conduct the role well.
  • Make an impact locally, and to an extent nationally.

The role is not remunerated. The Chair will join a well-functioning organisation with a skilled, friendly, committed staff and Board. We are part of an increasingly confident network of 46 UK Community Foundations, each independently managed, with a separate organisation, UKCF, to connect with the national landscape.

Working with the Deputy Chair, Treasurer and CEO, the Chair's specific duties include:

  • Chairing the four annual meetings of our Board; attend key panels as required.
  • Leading on board development, identifying gaps and supporting trustee recruitment/training.
  • Leading the process of appraising, monitoring, and supporting the Chief Executive.
  • Representing the Foundation enthusiastically and knowledgeably at events and networks.
  • Attending national events once or twice a year; stay aware of wider developments
  • In collaboration with the Board, CEO, staff, President and Vice Presidents, helping generate substantial annual revenue for local communities, and foster our overall financial health, by identifying and connecting with major individual donors, corporate and/or foundation gifts.
  • Helping position the Community Foundation as an important local force.
  • Overseeing good governance.
