Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) is an ambitious, modern university; one that is always open to fresh ideas and thinking. Throughout our 130-year history, we have kept true to our core values of widening participation, social mobility and the transformative power of education. We change lives. We develop partnerships that shape the social, economic and cultural fabric of our region, including an employment-led approach to learning that ensures students achieve their ambitions. With a vision for an educational community that is highly connected, permeable, student and customer-focused, business oriented and aligned to strategic partners, we are home to over 6,000 students across our five campuses and a further 9,000 students studying through our partners. We provide an education that works for all regardless of background or circumstance; provides students with skills for life, able to meet the global challenges of the 21st Century; and is ethical and sustainable, from a University that always meets its social responsibilities, to students, to staff, and to society.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nick Braisby has been leading BNU on a transformative journey delivering against its strategy, Impact 2022. The University is consistently in the top quartile of the NSS for higher education institutions in the UK, exceeding the sector average in almost every area of the Survey (NSS, 2020).We deliver exceptional employment outcomes, score highly for social inclusion, and are making excellent progress against carbon reduction targets. Student enrolments and applications are growing, and the University’s financial resilience is strengthening. It is in this exciting context that we are looking for an exceptional individual to Chair the University Council. Council is the University’s governing body, with overall responsibility for its mission and success. As we continue on our Impact 2022 journey, Council and the Chair will have a key role to play in advising and challenging constructively the Vice-Chancellor and senior team in delivering against this strategy and creating the next.

The next Chair of BNU will be an experienced strategic leader with a professional profile and experience of governance at the highest level. We are looking for individuals with proven strategic ability and excellent business acumen. The successful candidate will be politically adept, confident and collegial; a Chair who will be ambitious in supporting the University in the delivery of our mission to transform lives through inspiring, employment- and profession-focused education, and enabling our students positively to impact society.

The time commitment for this role is 30-35 days annually. This is a non-remunerated post, although BNU will pay reasonable expenses.
