Job Description

Bewdley Museum is based in the centre of Bewdley town and is a Museum serving the whole of Wyre Forest. Entry is free. The role of the Museum is broadly to conserve and display the unique collections of the Wyre Forest area, for the enjoyment of the public.

Help us to establish an Independent Trust at a Local Authority heritage museum in Bewdley working as part of a new board to negotiate and manage the transition.

 

Role summary

As a Trustee of Bewdley Museum, you will participate fully as a Board member, agreeing strategies and the business plan, promoting ideas, exercising judgement and taking collective decisions on the full range of strategic responsibilities such as budget setting and monitoring, appointment and dismissal of staff and setting their terms and conditions,  building maintenance, collections and disposal policies, contractual arrangements and so on. Throughout you will be generally supporting the aims and objectives of the organisation and complying with charity law and your duties as a trustee. 

 

Person description

A qualified accountant or accountancy technician.

Ability to provide leadership and advice on financial matters affecting the charity in line with good practice, the Articles of Association and legal requirements, and report to the Board at regular intervals about the financial position of the charity.

 

Where the trustee would be expected to lead

  • Advising the Board on ensuring that effective financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place and are appropriate for the charity;
  • To support the Board to oversee and to ensure appropriate presentation of budgets, accounts, management accounts and financial statements;
  • To ensure appropriate presentation of accounts and records, ensuring that financial resources are spent in accordance with the charity’s policies, good governance, legal and regulatory requirements;
  • Liaising, where applicable, with the museum manager (or other appropriate member of staff) and supporting them on financial matters;
  • Supporting the Board to monitor the financial viability of the charity;
  • Creating in conjunction with the Museum staff sound financial processes and procedures for the control of the charity’s assets, including ensuring expenditure is in line with the charity’s objects;
  • Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan;
  • Reviewing the annual accounts and, where applicable, liaising with the charity’s external accountants to ensure the accounts are compliant with the current charities’ Statement of Recommended Practice;
  • Overseeing the making of appropriate arrangements for banking, payment systems, payroll, insurance, systems for payments to HMRC etc;
  • Depending on the banking arrangements adopted, acting as a person authorised to approve payments or other transactions from the bank account, whether electronically or as counter signatory on cheques;
  • Managing financial risks with a considered, proportionate and balanced approach;
  • Ability to comment on or oversee external advice on taxation issues.

Time commitment

The time commitment will be variable. It is anticipated that there will be a need for greater time commitment in the early months.
