Reach Volunteering is working with Disability Resource Centre in the recruitment of a new trustee to join their board.
About the organisation
The Disability Resource Centre (DRC), one of the leading disability organisations operating in Birmingham, Solihull and the wider West Midlands is seeking a Trustee to join their board.
DRC is a Disabled People User Led Organisation (DPULO) which means that is an organisation run by disabled people for disabled people. An important feature of DPULO organisations is that over 75% of their key decision makers are disabled or have a long term health condition.
About the role
The organisation is looking for an individual with a broad range of skills and experience to help them develop and grow over the years to come.
In addition, the new trustee must declare they have a disability or long term health condition in order for the organisation to meet their status as DPULO.
The trustees provide strategic leadership for the organisation and have a number of statutory duties including:
- Ensuring that DRC complies with its governing documents, company law and any other legislation or regulations
- Ensuring that DRC pursues its objectives as defined in its governing documents
- Ensuring that DRC uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects
- Contributing actively to the Board’s role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against them
- Safeguarding the good names and values of DRC
- Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of DRC
- Ensuring the financial stability of DRC
- Protecting and managing the property of the organisation and ensuing the proper organisation’s funds
- Be a critical friend to the Chief Executive
The ideal candidate must have a strong empathy with our mission to empower disabled people and those with long term health conditions to take control of their own lives and to actively seek out opportunities to achieve their full potential as individuals in mainstream society by building a sustainable business.
The new trustee must declare they have a disability or long term health condition in order for the organisation to meet their status as DPULO.
They must also have:
- Proven experience in their area of expertise; business development, business management and/or business planning, with experience in strategy, compliance, marketing and any other relevant area
- Commitment to the organisation
- Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
- Strategic vision
- Good independent judgement
- Ability to think creatively
- Willingess to speak your mind
- Understanding and aceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities iof being a trustee
- Ability to work effetively as part of a team
What impact will the opportunity have?
Your involvement as a trustee will enable us to continue carrying out our mission of empowering disabled people and those with long term health conditions.
You will also help us to develop and increase our services, which will allow us to provide further support to our beneficiaries and hopefully extend our services to those that need them.
Overall, the organisation is going through a lot of growth and development and the role of trustee will definitely have a strategic impact on the plans.
What’s in it for the volunteer?
This is a great opportunity to be part of a forward thinking organisation with a fantastic cause. This role will enable you to work alongside a diverse workforce and you will have a unique experience of working in user led organisation.
The commitment would involve reading papers and reports in preparation for meetings, attending meetings (approximately once every two months) which last up to two hours. Attendance at the Annual General Meeting once a year and board planning days (once a year, usually lasting half a day). The trustee may be required to attend a sub group based on specific tasks that meet more frequently.
