Barnsole Primary Trust is a specialist ‘primary only’ trust in Medway. Currently comprised of four schools, the trust is looking to expand over the next two years. The trust is looking for a non-executive director with a finance background to join the trust board. Board meetings are held in Gillingham.
About the Trust
Barnsole Primary is a ‘primary only trust’ based in Medway, a local authority that has underperformed, especially at Key Stage 2, for a number of years. There are currently four schools in the trust with approx. 1,200 pupils and a budget of £20m. The trust believes that every child has the right to access a good or outstanding school. This means a commitment to working collaboratively and effectively using everyone’s strengths to meet a common aim. They are proud of the teaching and leadership capacity that is being built across Barnsole Primary Trust; as a result of this strength, the trust is now poised to move forward into a period of significant growth.
Barnsole Primary Trust is a cost-effective organisation that has a clear business model delivering the efficiency, effectiveness and challenge required to ensure that school improvement is at the forefront of everything we do. There is a relentless drive for continued improvement in teaching, learning, leadership and governance, to achieve the best personal and educational outcomes for every pupil.
Plans for the Future
The trust is in discussion with two other schools who are considering joining the trust by the end of the calendar year. It anticipates expanding to 10 schools in the next two years with a projected budget of £50m+.

Role 1 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.
The appointed individual will also take on the role of Chair of the Finance Committee.
The competencies required for this role include:
- CFO/ Finance
- Corporate governance
- Growth Management
The trust is keen to hear from high calibre candidates with substantial financial business expertise and a good understanding of governance.

Background on Academy Trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 28% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 726 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
