Job Description

GFM Education, a newly established trust in Hampshire, seeks two new board members. Board meetings are held at multiple locations in Gosport and Fareham.


About the trust

Gosport and Fareham Multi-Academy Trust (GFM) was formed in April 2017. The trust was established with the aim of ensuring no learner in any of the coastal schools in and around Gosport is left behind in the progress they make. There is much variation between the quality of provision between schools in Gosport and so the GFM is a multi-academy trust providing a local solution to increase consistency in the quality of provision between providers in the town. There is considerable deprivation in coastal towns across England and Gosport in particular which adds to the challenge. The proportion of pupils in GFM secondary provision who qualify for the Pupil Premium Grant is 2.5 times the national average and four times the Hampshire average for secondary pupils. In the GFM special school, the proportion is twice the national and 2.5 times the Hampshire averages for special schools; in the GFM primary provision, the proportion is above the national average and just over twice the Hampshire average.  

The GFM currently consists of two secondary schools, one junior school and one specialist provision:

  • Bay House: a secondary school and sixth form rated Good by Ofsted
  • Brune Park Community School: a secondary school that has been in special measures
  • Gomer Junior School: an Ofsted Good rated junior school
  • LWS Academy: a school which supports boys with social, mental and emotional health needs

The GFM roll is currently 3833 learners (239 primary, 3157 secondary and 437 sixth form). Current turnover is circa £21M per annum. It is anticipated that these will both grow with the addition of another local primary phase school.

Plans for the Future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. To support all schools and to be rated at least Good by Ofsted;
  2. To contribute to improvements in core services for vulnerable children and their families – for example, enhanced support for parents and access to emotional, health and well-being support - to enable increased life chances;
  3. To create a model local MAT that offers a blue print for local systems of schools seeking a solution to their specific local challenges;
  4. To enable other 'local solutions' to thrive.

Role 1 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.

The competencies required for this role include:


  • Audit Committee Chair
  • CFO/ Finance
  • Non-executive/ Trustee

An ACA or CIMA qualification is desirable but not essential


Person specification

The trust would welcome applications from those who have a skillset and experience in finance/accountancy to advise and guide on the trust’s processes, policies and systems. They should be able to balance risk with intended outcomes and understand the operational principles of best value.

A knowledge or experience of working in an educational context would be desirable but is not necessary.

Time commitment

6 hours /month minimum. Currently the board is scheduled to meet four times a year. From time to time the board holds additional informal meetings, facilitating more extended discussions, as required.

Role 2 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability during a period of rapid growth and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and growth and holding the CEO/CFO to account. The competencies required for this role include:


  • Growth Management
  • HR
  • Succession Planning


  • Non-executive/ Trustee
  • Restructuring

Person specification

The trust would welcome applications from those with a background in functional HR, people management, and staffing to enable them to challenge and scrutinise all matters of HR across the trust and significantly contribute to the strategic planning and organisation of the HR requirements of a trust. A professional with experience of managing staffing restructures would be beneficial. A knowledge or experience of working in an educational context would be desirable but is not necessary.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 71% of secondary schools and 26% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 980 multi academy trusts of 2+ schools.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
