Use your accounting expertise to transform lives: become a Governor of The Sheffield College
The Sheffield College is seeking an outstanding individual with an accounting background to join its Governing Body.
Our vision is transforming lives through learning, and we make a major contribution to the economy and vitality of the city of Sheffield by providing academic, vocational and professional courses, and apprenticeships, to approximately 16,000 young people and adults a year.
More than 70% of our students stay on and work in the city. The annual economic impact of the College on the city is estimated at £321 million. The College has been commended for its partnership working with employers and having a curriculum that meets the skills needs of the city and labour market priorities.
Governors play a very important role. They act as our ambassadors. Many of our governors are already working in senior roles across the Sheffield City Region.
As a member of the Governing Body your insights, skills, experience and ideas would widen our strategic perspective and help to shape the College’s future development. The Governing Body is diverse. We are keen to strengthen that diversity and would welcome applicants from a Black, Asian or minority ethnic background.
The vacancy for a new Governor will be available from June 2018. We are looking for a professionally qualified accountant who is interested in and supportive of the mission and purpose of further education:
1. would be willing, in principle and after a suitable familiarisation period, to become Chair of the Governing Body’s Finance, Employment and General Purposes committee, and to play an active role on finance on the Governing Body;
2. has experience of running or auditing or governing large organisations that are subject to charity or public sector scrutiny rules;
3. would feel confident to provide support and challenge to the senior team on financial matters;
4. is prepared to have their own activities as a Governor scrutinised by colleague members of the Governing Body.
Appointments to the Governing Body are for two years in the first instance with the likelihood of extension to four years by mutual agreement. Being a Governor is a voluntary role so there is no remuneration other than reasonable out of pocket expenses.
