St Albans School is an independent school for 850 pupils (boys and is co-ed in the sixth firm). We have a vacancy for a School Governor who will also be a member of the Finance Committee and will Chair the Accounts Sub-Committee.
The role requires someone who is a qualified accountant with previous exposure to the charitable sector and has a keen interest in supporting the delivery of world-class education. As a Governor the main responsibilities are:
- Determine the overall direction and development of the School through good governance and clear strategic planning.
- Ensure that the School and its representatives function within the legal and regulatory framework of the sector and in line with the School’s governing document, continually striving for best practice in governance.
- Uphold the fiduciary duty invested in the position, undertaking such duties in a way that adds to public confidence and trust in the School
The Finance Committee receive reports, review, monitor implementation, consider changes, and where required make recommendations on the:
- adoption of strategic financial targets e.g. cash reserves, level of surplus, percentage of staff costs to fees etc.; revenue budget, capital budget and cashflow forecast for the next financial year; financial forecast and cash-flow covering the next five years; financial performance against budget, treasury and investment arrangements and borrowing facility arrangements; tuition fee and additional charges for the next financial year and policy on, and application of, additional charges, fee concessions, discounts, scholarships and bursaries; status of fee debtors and application of recovery policy; operation of trading operations and subsidiary companies proper application of accounting procedures and standards; internal management accounting systems; investment policy and targets, investment portfolio and overall rate of return
