Role description and person specification

Background

Communities Empowerment Network is a registered charity no. 1099111 based in London which promotes equality and justice by providing information, advice, support, and advocacy services to those experiencing mistreatment and disadvantage in education.  Support is provided in particular to parents of pupils who have been subjected to fixed or permanent exclusion. CEN also provides advocacy training and holds parent forums where participants can come together and share experiences, knowledge and create their own strategies and solutions.

                                                  

Trustee role description

The duties of a trustee management committee member are to:-

  • Ensure that CEN complies with its governing document, charity law company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations including equality legislation
  • Ensure that CEN pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document
  • Ensure CEN applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives
  • Contribute actively to the management committee by giving firm strategic direction to CEN, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
  • Safeguard the good name and values of CEN
  • Ensure the financial stability of CEN

Minimum time commitment

Trustees are expected to attend all management committee meetings which are currently held once a month on a Saturday at CEN offices. They may also be asked to take part in meetings of sub-committees, and staff meetings, recruitment exercises as well as attend induction meetings, training events and other related activities.

Person Specification

                                           

Each trustee must have:-

  • A commitment to the mission of CEN including a commitment to equality of opportunity and human rights
  • An understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of the trusteeship.
  • The ability to understand and be abreast of legal and policy changes in relevant areas.
  • A willingness to meet the minimum time commitment needed to attend management committee meetings, induction meetings and take part in other related activities
  • Strategic vision
  • Good independent judgement
  • An ability to think creatively
  • Integrity
  • The ability to engage effectively with staff and stakeholders
  • The  ability to work effectively as a team and to take decisions for the good of CEN

  • Financial management, income generation and enterprise
  • Bid/tender writing
  • Funding/Foundations
  • Public and private law
  • Public policy and public affairs within education
  • National and local voluntary sector relating to education
  • National and local government and statutory bodies relating to education
  • Digital strategy
  • Human resource management
  • Volunteering management and brokerage
  • Collaborative partnerships
  • Social investment and impact
